OS 10.0 - 10.1: Cheetah and Puma
Get rid of it. These old versions were not
ready for prime time. Any older G3 or G4 computer can at least run 10.2
Jaguar. There are plenty of copies for sale on eBay or on We Love Macs.
OS X 10.2: Jaguar
Get rid of this one too. However; if you're a glutton for punishment. Do the following:
Run
Disk First Aid: Go to Applications/ Utilities. Find Disk Utility and
launch it. Click on your hard drive in the side bar, then click on
Repair Disk Permissions. Do this once a month or after updating your
system. Make sure you do this if your system crashes.
Run MacJanitor: Mac
Janitor is a utility that runs Unix Cron Jobs. It will run on Jaguar,
Panther, or Tiger. To clear UNIX monthly Cron jobs, run Mac Janitor
once a week. Download this free utility and install it in your
Utilities folder on your Mac. First you will need to unlock the lock
with your administrative password. Then run all of the jobs at least
once a month. This helps to keep Unix in line and will keep your Mac
running smoothly. Get Mac Janitor 1.3 here.

OS X 10.3 Panther, 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard, 10.6 Snow Leopard:
The best utility for fixing everything on a Panther, Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard system is Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner. It is several utilities rolled into one. It will do most everything for free plus more, however; you can upgrade Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner so that it checks for viruses on your Mac for just $9.99. I can't live without it. Get it here: Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner.
Print out these instructions before you start. Once you download Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, it will open. Drag the vacuum cleaner into your Applications folder. Once there, launch SLCC. Wait for the count down and click on Demo. Under the Maintain tab, you will check Repair Permissions, Run Maintenance Scripts, Rebuild Prebindings and Clean System Log Archives. Then click on Run. You will have to reboot. Once you reboot, Launch the Cleaner again. Now click on the Caches tab. Click on the Light Cleaning radio button. Now check all the check boxes. Then click on Clean. When it's done, restart. Test your system now and see if it's faster. If it not, go back to the Caches tab in Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a deep cleaning. This may take a while. If you are still having trouble, it's time for a Service Call.
